Welcome to the underworld! Population: pain. Narrated by Hermes, conductor of souls, Hadestown’s story follows the plights of young Orpheus and Eurydice in the hellishly industrial domain of King Hades. Stricken by debilitating poverty, our two innocent lovers find themselves at an impasse where one strives to hone his craft while the other agonizes about their survival. Eurydice, through the fervent urgency of the Fates, throws herself into Hades’ labyrinthian factory, contracted to work for the rest of her days.

Brave the capitalistic nightmare of the underworld with Orpheus as he embarks on a perilous journey to save his lost love. Hadestown offers a striking aesthetic, featuring devilishly sharp costumes, intricate set pieces, and kaleidoscopic music combining classical jazz and folk opera in silky harmony.

“When I first started working on Hadestown, I really identified with the Orpheus character. I was right out of school, and I was very optimistic and a creative young person coming into the real world. I was up against a lot at that time, both politically and financially. I felt like Orpheus. He is this idealist and dreamer who then is put up against the way the world is,” writer-composer Mitchell relates to the idealistic artist.

Hadestown’s original version debuted in 2006, followed by a two-state tour in 2007 between Vermont and Massachusetts. Unsure about the production’s future, creator Anaïs Mitchell released it in 2010 as a concept album.

In 2012, Mitchell teamed up with future Drama Desk awardee Anaïs Mitchell, developing new songs and dialogue for the show. This second incarnation premiered Off-Broadway in 2016, which led to London and Edmonton productions and, eventually, its Broadway debut in March 2019.

Hadestown’s Broadway opening met resounding acclaim, receiving the most nominations in the 73rd Tony Awards with 14 categories clinched. It won 8, including the highly sought-after Best Musical and Best Original Score awards. It also racked up wins from the Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle Awards, which include Outstanding New Broadway Musical, Outstanding Director of a Musical, and Outstanding New Score.
