One measure of a performance's triumph is its haul of Tony Awards, and the remarkable production has a good number of. Among 14 nominations it got for the 2019 Tony Awards, Hadestown clinched eight victories, among them the much-coveted title of Best Musical. Furthermore, the production was honored with accolades for its enchanting musical score by David Mitchell, the insightful direction of Rachel Chavkin, the standout performance by André De Shields, the ingenious scenic design, the noteworthy sound design, the masterful lighting design, and the artful orchestrations.
In Anais Mitchell's reimagining of a ancient Greek story, Eurydice is presented as a young woman adept in surviving on her own in a world filled with unpredictability, even in climate. Conversely, Orpheus is a ardent singer-songwriter overflowing with sentiments. Upon their initial encounter, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, in which Hades transforms his workers into mindless drones.
Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, and aided by his melodious tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he manages to bringing her back to his residence.
The cast is small, consisting of just 13 members, who remain on the stage for the majority of the show. The chorus consists of five cast members, who lend their voices and dance in the background to enhance the vigor of the songs. Among the performers are the 3 Fates, engaging in song, dialogue, and interaction with the characters. The entire seven-piece band for "Hadestown" plays the entire show while all excluding the drummer are visible on stage. The main characters encompass the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.
