Composer and lyricist Anaïs Mitchell wrote the music, lyrics, and book for the show Hadestown. It recounts a retold version of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a young girl in need of sustenance, sets out to work in a bleak industrial representation of the Greek underworld to evade poverty and chill temperatures. Her paramour Orpheus, a destitute singer-songwriter, sets off on a mission to save her.
Upon its initial Broadway launch, the show received 14 Tony Awards nominations, winning eight coveted accolades. It achieved itself the coveted title of ‘Best Musical,’ much to the enthusiastic fans. The presentation premiered on Broadway on April 17, 2019, gaining commendation. It was applauded for its direction and André De Shields' outstanding portrayal in André De Shields.
