Anaïs Mitchell wrote the music, lyrics, and book for the musical Hadestown. It narrates a modernized version of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a maiden facing starvation, sets out to work in a grim industrial representation of the Greek underworld to escape poverty and the biting cold. Her beau Orpheus, a penniless singer-songwriter, embarks on a quest to reclaim her.
During its first Broadway unveiling, the Broadway production received 14 Tony Awards nods, achieving eight prestigious awards. It attained itself the coveted designation of ‘Best Musical,’ greatly delighting the enthusiastic fans. The performance premiered on Broadway on April 17, 2019, garnering high praise.
