In Anais Mitchell's reimagining of a ancient Greek story, Eurydice is presented as a young woman adept in navigating on her own in a world characterized by unpredictability, even in weather conditions. On the other hand, Orpheus is a fervent singer-songwriter brimming with emotions. Upon their initial encounter, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, in which Hades transforms his workers into automated drones.
Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, with the assistance of his harmonious tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he manages to bringing her back to his residence.
The cast is efficient, comprising only 13 members, who remain on the forefront for the most of the show. The ensemble consists of 5 cast members, who lend their voices and dance in the background to heighten the vitality of the songs. Present in the cast the three Fates, who sing, converse, and interact with the characters. The full seven-piece band for "Hadestown" plays the entire show while all except the drummer are on display on stage. The central protagonists embody the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.
