From the 14 nominations it got for the 2019 Tony Awards, the show clinched eight victories, including the much-coveted title of Best Musical. Moreover, the play garnered accolades for its mesmerizing music composed by David Mitchell, the skillful direction of Rachel Chavkin, the standout performance by André De Shields, the creative scenic design, the impressive sound design, the masterful lighting design, and the artful orchestrations.
In Anais Mitchell's reinterpretation of a Greek tale, Eurydice is shown as a young woman skilled in navigating on her own in a world filled with unpredictability, even in climate. Conversely, Orpheus is a passionate singer-songwriter filled with feelings. After their first meeting, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, where Hades transforms his workers into automated drones.
Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, assisted by his musical tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he manages to bringing her back to his residence.
The cast is small, consisting of just 13 members, who remain on the forefront for the bulk of the show. The ensemble consists of five cast members, who lend their voices and dance in the background to enhance the energy of the songs. Among the performers are the 3 Fates, who sing, converse, and interact with the characters. The entire seven-piece band for "Hadestown" delivers the full performance while all except the drummer are seen on stage. The central protagonists include the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.
