An indicator of a performance's triumph is its collection of Tony Awards, and the remarkable production has a good number of. Out of the 14 nominations it earned for the 2019 Tony Awards, the show clinched eight victories, among them the much-coveted title of Best Musical. Moreover, the play garnered accolades for its captivating music composed by David Mitchell, the masterful direction of Rachel Chavkin, the standout performance by André De Shields, the creative scenic design, the impressive sound design, the masterful lighting design, and the creative orchestrations.
In Anais Mitchell's reshaping of a Hellenic story, Eurydice is presented as a young woman adept in surviving on her own in a world characterized by unpredictability, even in climate. Conversely, Orpheus is a fervent singer-songwriter overflowing with sentiments. Upon their first meeting, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, where Hades transforms his workers into mindless drones.
Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, assisted by his melodious tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he achieves bringing her back to his residence.
The cast is efficient, made up of merely 13 members, who remain on the forefront for the most of the performance. The chorus consists of five cast members, who provide their singing and dancing in the background to heighten the energy of the songs. Included among the actors the three Fates, combining singing, conversation, and interaction with the characters. The full seven-piece band for "Hadestown" performs the entire production while all except the drummer are seen on stage. The central protagonists embody the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.
