Out of the 14 nominations it earned for the 2019 Tony Awards, the show clinched eight victories, including the much-coveted title of Best Musical. Furthermore, the production was honored with accolades for its enchanting music composed by David Mitchell, the skillful direction of Rachel Chavkin, the standout performance by André De Shields, the creative scenic design, the striking sound design, the artful lighting design, and the skillful orchestrations.
In Anais Mitchell's reinterpretation of a ancient Greek tale, Eurydice is depicted as a young woman adept in surviving on her own in a world characterized by unpredictability, even in climate. On the other hand, Orpheus is a fervent singer-songwriter brimming with emotions. Upon their first meeting, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, where Hades transforms his workers into mindless drones.
Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, assisted by his harmonious tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he achieves bringing her back to his residence.
The cast is small, consisting of just 13 members, who stay put on the stage for the bulk of the show. The ensemble consists of 5 cast members, who provide their singing and dancing in the background to boost the vigor of the songs. Included among the actors the 3 Fates, combining singing, conversation, and interaction with the characters. The entire seven-piece band for "Hadestown" plays the entire show while all with the exception of the drummer are on display on stage. The primary figures include the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.
