This remarkable production known as Hadestown is no outlier when it comes to the tragic conclusions that mark a lot of musicals. The opening song clearly declares it to be a "sad song" and a "sad tale." Despite its tragic conclusion, "Hadestown" draws interest because of its brilliant cast and well-defined plot containing a potent message. The story retells the myth of Orpheus from Greek mythology. The central focus revolves around the odyssey of Orpheus and Eurydice to Hadestown, the realm ruled by Hades, where their closely connected love story unfolds.
Anaïs Mitchell, the creative force behind this astonishing production, is credited with its music, lyrics, and book. Her impressive skills are evident in her other prominent creations like Young Man in America and Child Ballads. In collaboration with director Rachel Chavkin, Mitchell embarked on a journey to create a reimagined form of the theatrical piece in 2012. This updated rendition included added musical pieces and dialogues. The altered theatrical adaptation of the musical, crafted under Chavkin's direction, premiered Off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on May 6 and ran until July 31. The production later had performances in Edmonton and London before making its grand entry on Broadway in March 2019.

Combining elements of steampunk, "Westworld," and Bourbon Street disarray, this dark tuner originated as a concept album in 2010 – a kind of folk opera – created by the incredible singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell.”
