An indicator of a performance's triumph is its collection of Tony Awards, and Hadestown has quite a few. Out of 14 nominations it got for the 2019 Tony Awards, the show clinched eight victories, including the much-coveted title of Best Musical. Additionally, the musical was honored with accolades for its captivating musical score by David Mitchell, the skillful direction of Rachel Chavkin, the standout performance by André De Shields, the ingenious scenic design, the striking sound design, the masterful lighting design, and the creative orchestrations.
In Anais Mitchell's reinterpretation of a Hellenic tale, Eurydice is shown as a young woman skilled in coping on her own in a world where unpredictability, even in climate. Conversely, Orpheus is a fervent singer-songwriter filled with feelings. Upon their initial encounter, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, in which Hades transforms his workers into mindless drones.
Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, assisted by his musical tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he achieves bringing her back to his abode.
The cast is small, consisting of just 13 members, who stay on the stage for the bulk of the performance. The ensemble consists of 5 cast members, who lend their voices and dance in the background to boost the energy of the songs. Present in the cast the 3 Fates, who sing, converse, and interact with the characters. The complete seven-piece band for "Hadestown" plays the entire show while all excluding the drummer are visible on stage. The main characters include the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.
