A way to gauge of a performance's triumph is its haul of Tony Awards, and Hadestown has quite a few. Out of the 14 nominations it earned for the 2019 Tony Awards, the show clinched eight victories, among them the much-coveted title of Best Musical. In Anais Mitchell's reinterpretation of a ancient Greek legend, Eurydice is presented as a young woman well-versed in navigating on her own in a world filled with unpredictability, even in weather conditions. On the other hand, Orpheus is a fervent singer-songwriter filled with feelings. Upon their initial encounter, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, where Hades transforms his workers into automated drones.
Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, assisted by his musical tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he achieves bringing her back to his dwelling.
The cast is compact, made up of merely 13 members, who remain on center stage for the majority of the performance. The ensemble consists of five cast members, who lend their voices and dance in the background to enhance the energy of the songs. Among the performers are the 3 Fates, engaging in song, dialogue, and interaction with the characters. The full seven-piece band for "Hadestown" plays the entire show while all excluding the drummer are on display on stage. The primary figures embody the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.
