An indicator of a performance's triumph is its haul of Tony Awards, and the remarkable production has quite a few. Out of 14 nominations it received for the 2019 Tony Awards, the show clinched eight victories, including the much-coveted title of Best Musical. Additionally, the musical garnered accolades for its mesmerizing musical score by David Mitchell, the skillful direction of Rachel Chavkin, the standout performance by André De Shields, the ingenious scenic design, the striking sound design, the expert lighting design, and the skillful orchestrations.
In Anais Mitchell's reimagining of a Hellenic story, Eurydice is presented as a young woman well-versed in navigating on her own in a world characterized by unpredictability, even in meteorological patterns. On the other hand, Orpheus is a passionate singer-songwriter filled with feelings. Upon their first meeting, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, where Hades transforms his workers into unthinking drones.
Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, assisted by his musical tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he manages to bringing her back to his abode.
The cast is small, made up of merely 13 members, who stay on center stage for the bulk of the show. The ensemble consists of 5 cast members, who provide their singing and dancing in the background to boost the vitality of the songs. Included among the actors the three Fates, who sing, converse, and interact with the characters. The entire seven-piece band for "Hadestown" performs the entire production while all excluding the drummer are seen on stage. The main characters encompass the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.
