One measure of a performance's triumph is its haul of Tony Awards, and this outstanding show has a good number of. From 14 nominations it received for the 2019 Tony Awards, Hadestown clinched eight victories, including the much-coveted title of Best Musical. Additionally, the play was honored with accolades for its enchanting musical score by David Mitchell, the insightful direction of Rachel Chavkin, the standout performance by André De Shields, the creative scenic design, the noteworthy sound design, the masterful lighting design, and the skillful orchestrations.
In Anais Mitchell's reimagining of a Hellenic tale, Eurydice is presented as a young woman adept in coping on her own in a world where unpredictability, even in weather conditions. Conversely, Orpheus is a passionate singer-songwriter overflowing with sentiments. Upon their first meeting, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, where Hades transforms his workers into mindless drones.
Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, assisted by his harmonious tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he manages to bringing her back to his residence.
The cast is small, consisting of just 13 members, who stay put on the stage for the majority of the show. The choir consists of 5 cast members, who provide their singing and dancing in the background to boost the energy of the songs. Among the performers are the three Fates, engaging in song, dialogue, and interaction with the characters. The complete seven-piece band for "Hadestown" delivers the full performance while all excluding the drummer are visible on stage. The central protagonists encompass the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.
