Composer and lyricist Anaïs Mitchell wrote the music, lyrics, and book for the production Hadestown. It tells a modernized version of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a youthful woman facing starvation, ventures to work in a grim industrial depiction of the Greek underworld as a way to avoid poverty and chill temperatures. Her lover Orpheus, a poor singer-songwriter, sets off on a journey to rescue her.
