Composer and lyricist Anaïs Mitchell wrote the musical score, lyrics, and story for the show Hadestown. It recounts a reimagined version of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a maiden facing starvation, goes to work in a grim industrial depiction of the Greek underworld to escape poverty and freezing conditions. Her paramour Orpheus, a destitute singer-songwriter, sets off on a mission to save her.
During its first Broadway unveiling, the Broadway production garnered 14 Tony Awards mentions, securing eight prestigious awards. It achieved itself the desired designation of ‘Best Musical,’ much to the enthusiastic fans. The performance premiered on Broadway on April 17, 2019, gaining accolades.
