From the 14 nominations it earned for the 2019 Tony Awards, the show clinched eight victories, including the much-coveted title of Best Musical. Moreover, the production was honored with accolades for its mesmerizing music composed by David Mitchell, the masterful direction of Rachel Chavkin, the standout performance by André De Shields, the ingenious scenic design, the impressive sound design, the masterful lighting design, and the artful orchestrations.
In Anais Mitchell's reimagining of a ancient Greek tale, Eurydice is shown as a young woman well-versed in navigating on her own in a world where unpredictability, even in meteorological patterns. Conversely, Orpheus is a passionate singer-songwriter brimming with emotions. Upon their initial encounter, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, where Hades transforms his workers into unthinking drones.
Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, assisted by his harmonious tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he achieves bringing her back to his abode.
The cast is compact, consisting of just 13 members, who stay put on the forefront for the most of the performance. The chorus consists of five cast members, who provide their singing and dancing in the background to heighten the vigor of the songs. Included among the actors the three Fates, engaging in song, dialogue, and interaction with the characters. The full seven-piece band for "Hadestown" plays the entire show while all with the exception of the drummer are seen on stage. The primary figures include the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.
